SUMMARY:Key insights and lessons for Nature-based Solutions and territorial planning in the EU
DESCRIPTION:What lessons can be learned from EU regions on design\, implementation\, governance and monitoring of nature-based solutions (NbS)? What are cross-regional insights on barriers and success factors for NbS? Which policy-relevant recommendations can be drawn? Join this practical workshop co-organised by Climate KIC as part of the ReAdapt project and get insights for your territorial planning. \n\n\n\nThe ReAdapt Sensemaking Workshop aims to address these questions. It brings together EU\, national\, and regional policymakers\, case study regions and ESPON representatives to distil shared lessons for stronger NbS implementation across Europe. These lessons will directly feed into the ReAdapt Policy Guidance Toolkit\, which offers policy guidelines throughout the NbS policy cycle (Problem identification & scoping\, Planning & design\, Financing\, Implementation and Monitoring). \n\n\n\nDuring this interactive workshop\, we will: \n\n\n\n\nGather insights for the ReAdapt Policy Guidance Toolkit\n\n\n\nPresent ReAdapt results so far: the Knowledge repository\, Climate risk maps\, cross-regional lessons and Policy Guidance Toolkit\n\n\n\nExplore cross-regional insights on barriers and success factors for NbS\n\n\n\nReflect on NbS design\, implementation\, governance\, financing\, and monitoring\n\n\n\nTranslate local experiences into policy-relevant recommendations\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout ReAdapt\n\n\n\nESPON ReAdapt (Re-Naturing Territorial Development for Climate Risk Adaptation I 2024-2026) aims to strengthen local and regional climate adaptation in the EU by integrating NbS into governance. Despite their effectiveness\, NbS face challenges such as fragmented knowledge\, limited data and lack of clear policy recommendations. ReAdapt addresses these issues by developing a knowledge repository\, spatial climate risk visualizations\, gathering best practices from eight case studies\, and developing a Policy Guidance Toolkit.

SUMMARY:Circular supply chains: Transforming critical materials into strategic advantage
DESCRIPTION:In this session at the Future of Utilities conference in Amsterdam\, Alberto Ogura\, Industry Decarbonisation Lead at Climate KIC\, will explore how circular supply chains can help address one of the major structural challenges facing the energy transition: access to critical raw materials. As demand grows for technologies such as batteries\, renewable energy infrastructure and electric mobility\, securing sustainable and resilient supply chains is becoming increasingly strategic. \n\n\n\nDrawing on Climate KIC’s work with partners including Pyxera Global\, the keynote will highlight how the Circular Supply Chain Coalition is expanding its activities in Europe. The initiative brings together industry actors to advance circular design\, resource recovery and new collaboration models that strengthen resilience while reducing environmental impacts. \n\n\n\nThe session will examine how circular approaches to materials management can turn resource constraints into opportunities for long-term innovation\, competitiveness and sustainability across Europe’s energy and industrial systems. \n\n\n\n\n\nClimate KIC is also offering an exclusive discount code for the event tickets only for Community members. SUMMARY:Transferring circularity to Eastern Europe: From strategy to real impact
DESCRIPTION:The conference “Transferring Circularity to Eastern Europe: From Strategy to Real Impact” will take place on 12 March 2026 in Ljubljana\, Slovenia\, in a hybrid format allowing both in-person and online participation. The event is organised by Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE\, a European Union funding programme that supports transnational cooperation across Central Europe. \n\n\n\nBringing together policymakers\, industry representatives\, innovation actors and project partners\, the conference will explore how circular economy principles can move from policy ambition to practical implementation across Eastern Europe. Participants will discuss how European cooperation\, digital tools and regional initiatives can help translate circular economy strategies into concrete action and strengthen more resource-efficient and resilient economic systems across the region. \n\n\n\nClimate KIC will contribute to the programme through a presentation by Marco Antonio Segovia Bifarini\, titled “Circularity in Eastern Europe: Strategic Outlook”\, which brings together policy experts\, regional actors and innovation leaders to discuss how circular economy strategies can be strengthened across the region. \n\n\n\nIn his contribution\, Marco will explore why circular economy in Eastern Europe requires a strategic rethink and what lessons can be drawn from the Deep Demonstration in Slovenia. This place-based initiative has brought together policymakers\, businesses and research organisations to experiment with new approaches to circular innovation\, helping to translate strategy into concrete action.

SUMMARY:Policy Lab: Efficient\, Circular and Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:In cities and communities across the EU\, delivering affordable housing is an urgent social\, economic\, and political imperative. Meeting this demand requires solutions that are both cost- effective and future-proof. \n\n\n\nLeveraging the co-benefits of circular\, energy-efficient\, and climate-resilient housing – such as lower energy and maintenance costs\, greater insurability\, and reduced climate risks – can make homes more affordable in the long run and open the door to innovative\, collaborative\, and systemic solutions. \n\n\n\nTo this end\, the EU Cities Mission is engaging European businesses and industry to translate Mission Cities’ Action and Investment Plans into specific\, quantified\, aggregate demand for green materials and technologies\, infrastructure\, manufacturing\, logistics\, interoperable digital solutions\, and green business models. In this way\, we can accelerate the formation of European lead markets and enhance competitiveness through resilience to climate and economic shocks. \n\n\n\nEmploying an innovative policy impact lab approach\, in this session Climate KIC\, in partnership with the Huge Thing and IRMIR (Institute for the Development of Cities and Regions) will gather key representatives of the European built environment ecosystem – policy makers\, industry\, innovators\, local governments\, subject experts – to start addressing housing related (esp. in terms of renovation or new construction) issues in a practice-oriented way. These representatives will work on matching challenges with solutions\, identifying gaps\, and creating space for participants to acknowledge both opportunities and limitations\, to jointly explore ways and projects for moving forward. \n\n\n\n\n[Business models] In what areas are circularity and efficiency co-benefits of affordability? How can this potential be maximized?\n\n\n\n[Innovations] How can alternative and innovative approaches (like zero-emissions building sites\, offsite construction\, energy management innovations etc.)\, be integrated affordably?\n\n\n\n[Costs] What are the key cost drivers constraining the potential of building renovation / new constructions being delivered in affordable and sustainable ways\, and how can they be addressed?\n\n\n\n[Costs] To what extent can innovative financial instruments (e.g. guarantees\, subordinated debt\, pay-as-you-save models etc.) balance short-term feasibility with long-term sustainability?\n\n\n\n[Waste] In what ways might construction and demolition waste be transformed from a cost burden into a reliable source of secondary materials?\n\n\n\n[Waste] How might circular and low-carbon materials\, e.g. low-clinker cement or second-hand steel\, be more broadly adopted?\n\n\n\n[Regulation] What innovations in the EU’s policies (shaping and implementation) or standards can ease affordability concerns without sacrificing sustainability?\n\n\n\n[Data] How can data (governance and use)\, digitization and AI be harnessed to drive sustainability and affordability?\n\n\n\n[Skills] What are the key skills and capacities missing amongst both workers and companies. What kinds of partnerships or models are needed to bridge the gap swiftly – to be able to reap the competitiveness benefits from transforming and becoming innovative? \n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n13:00 – 13:30 Registration & Networking \n\n\n\n13:30 – 14:15 \n\n\n\nWelcome Remarks by the Organisers \n\n\n\n\nKatarzyna Bałucka-Dębska\, Head of Policy and EU Affairs\, Climate KIC\n\n\n\nMaryla Wojcieszek\, Vice-President and Co-Owner\, Huge Thing\n\n\n\n\nOpening Remarks: \n\n\n\n\nData applied at neighbourhood level: The case of the Basque Region’s Building PassportAndoni Hidalgo\, Climate KIC / Basque Urban Agenda\, International Affairs AdvisorAnder Bilbao Figuero\, Ciclica\n\n\n\nOslo case – Public procurement leveraging lead markets creationPrzemysław Derwich & Paweł Kaczkan\, Climate KIC\n\n\n\nPolish case study\n\n\n\nViews from the marketRepresentatives from ROBYG SA & Vantage SA\n\n\n\n\n14:15 – 15:45 Lab-Style Discussions and Q&A \n\n\n\nParticipants will join lab-style\, solution-focused discussions designed to move beyond sequential remarks and problem definition\, encouraging practical exchange and co-creation of solutions. Discussion themes include: \n\n\n\n\nLeveraging public procurement and finance\n\n\n\nEnabling circular solutions\n\n\n\nUsing data and digital tools\n\n\n\nImproving energy efficiency\n\n\n\nBuilding skills and capacity of workers and companies\n\n\n\n\n15:45 – 16:00 Roundtable Summaries and Closing Remarks \n\n\n\n16:00 – 17:30 Networking

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) changes this by linking ideas with impact\, talent with markets\, and emerging regions with established hubs.  \n\n\n\nThe EIT Innovation Awards 2025 showcase this mission with three flagship events coming together under one banner for the first time: \n\n\n\n\nThe EIT Jumpstarter Grand Finale: after a seven-month pre-acceleration programme\, early-stage innovators from moderate and emerging regions compete for prizes of up to EUR 10 000 across seven categories: Energy\, Food\, Health\, New European Bauhaus\, Raw Materials\, Urban Mobility\, and Rebuild Ukraine. Selection also takes place for EIT Jumpstarter Next\, a track for alumni advancing validated ideas to market entry\n\n\n\n\n\nThe EIT Awards: celebrating excellence across four categories: \n\n\n\n\n\nMost Promising EIT Changemaker: a leader whose activities create significant social impact.\n\n\n\nBest Innovation Team: a diverse group pioneering a transformative product or service.\n\n\n\nMost Promising Venture: a startup within the EIT Community showing strong growth potential.\n\n\n\nPublic Award: the community’s favourite innovation\, chosen by public vote. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe EIT Red Kalyna Celebrations: recognising Ukrainian women entrepreneurs\, educators\, researchers\, and mentors who drive innovation and positive change\, honouring groundbreaking products\, solutions\, and businesses that embody resilience and determination\n\n\n\n\nWhy It Matters \n\n\n\nTogether\, these initiatives reflect the full circle of European innovation: no region left behind\, every innovator recognised\, no good idea unsupported. By connecting countries\, sectors\, and stages of development\, the EIT acts as Europe’s bridge – from East to West\, North to South\, from the earliest pitch to global breakthrough.  \n\n\n\nSave the date to discover the winners on 25 November.

SUMMARY:Climathon Kraków 2025
DESCRIPTION:Urban heat islands during heatwaves. Rising summer temperatures are becoming increasingly hazardous to our health\, infrastructure\, and quality of life\, and we believe that local communities hold the key to creating meaningful and innovative solutions. \n\n\n\nOn 13 November 2025\, Kraków joins cities around the world for Climathon – a global movement that brings together citizens\, creatives\, and changemakers to design solutions for local climate challenges. \n\n\n\nThis year’s Climathon in Kraków will focus on one of the city’s most pressing issues: urban heat islands during heatwaves – hotspots that intensify heatwaves\, posing a threat to health\, infrastructure\, and urban life. Rising summer temperatures are becoming increasingly hazardous to our health\, infrastructure\, and quality of life. We believe that local communities hold the key to creating meaningful and innovative solutions. \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin the day with the 2030 SDGs Game\, a powerful multiplayer simulation that helps participants experience what it takes to create a sustainable world. Guided by certified facilitator Antonios Triantafyllakis\, this session will set the stage for systemic thinking and collaborative action. Insights from Kraków will be shared on the Global Wall of Kizukis\, connecting our local conversations to a worldwide dialogue happening in parallel with COP30. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\nLearn from Kraków’s climate advisors about the challenge of urban heat islands\n\n\n\nForm teams and use creative tools to brainstorm and prototype solutions\n\n\n\nPitch their ideas to peers and partners for feedback and potential follow-up\n\n\n\n\nWhether you are a student\, designer\, activist\, professional\, policymaker\, or simply a concerned citizen\, this is your chance to take part in shaping Kraków’s climate future. \n\n\n\nThe Climathon is hosted at Apteka Designu (The Design Pharmacy)\, a unique living laboratory in the revitalised Wesoła district. Once a hospital pharmacy\, it has been transformed into a creative hub for experimentation\, design\, and community action. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Gamification Global\, in partnership with The Working Group at Apteka Designu\, and Kraków’s Climate Advisors. \n\n\n\nParticipation is free of charge\, but we kindly request that you commit to joining for the full day to maximise the benefits of this collaborative experience. \n\n\n\nBe part of Climathon Kraków 2025! Connect\, co-create\, and take action for a cooler\, greener\, and more resilient city.

SUMMARY:CoLab: Community-led housing and sustainable transitions
DESCRIPTION:European capitals are enduring a severe housing crisis that affects its inhabitants and climate. The EAA estimates that 75% Europeans lives in cities – increasing to 80% by 2050. Now\, 75% of those inhabitants lives in build environment that is energy inefficient. Furthermore\, rentals are soaring: OECD estimates that\, over the last decade\, the average rent has doubled in many European countries including Spain.   \n\n\n\nHowever\, in recent years\, cities like Barcelona have gained international momentum for an emerging model of public\, community-led partnerships. \n\n\n\nFor this Collaboration Lab (CoLab) on Friday 10 October and in partnership with holon\, we will explore such model by visiting two internationally awarded projects in Barcelona: La Borda and BLOC4. We’ll also discuss with key players of the local ecosystem how this transformation is happening in practice\, from green construction to finance and policies that promote the emergence of such locally led innovations.  \n\n\n\nThis CoLab is just the beginning. Over the coming three years\, Climate KIC Community\, will convene public and private stakeholders\, researchers and innovators to ignite a new movement to explore systemic climate solutions and collaborate to scale and pace their implementation.   \n\n\n\nJoin us if you’re ready to future-proof your organisation and collaborate with like-minded organisations and innovators.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n9.30 – 10.00: Welcome & coffee at Bloc4   \n\n\n\nWith Adria Garcia I Mateu\, Holon & Magnus Harrison\, Climate KIC  \n\n\n\n10.00 – 11.00: Visit to La Borda   \n\n\n\n11.15 – 11.45: Visit to BLOC4  \n\n\n\n12.00 – 12.30: Keynote: The emerging Catalan community led housing model   \n\n\n\nWith Adrià Garcia I Mateu\, Partner at Holon & Designer involved in cooperative housing policy co-production processes  \n\n\n\n12.30 – 13.15: Round table discussions   \n\n\n\nBuilding sustainable and holistic buildings & communities   \n\n\n\nWith Cristina Gamboa\, Co-founder of Lacol\, professor and architect of La Borda and other housing cooperatives.   \n\n\n\nAdvancing Housing Policies for a just transition  \n\n\n\nWith Eduard Cabré Romans\, Housing policy consultant and advisor of Barcelona City Council & member of CitiES platform   \n\n\n\nInnovating Finance to benefit environment and social good  \n\n\n\nWith Blanca Rincon de Arellano\, Associate – City Finance Specialist at The Investment Bank for Earth\, Bankers without Boarders  \n\n\n\n13.15 – 13.45: Gathering of insights\, reflections & next steps  \n\n\n\nWith Adria Garcia I Mateu\, Holon & Magnus Harrison\, Climate KIC  \n\n\n\n13.45 – 15.00: Lunch and networking  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Climate KIC Community CoLabs\n\n\n\nClimate KIC is hosting four Collaboration Laboratories (CoLabs) in the fall of 2025.  At our CoLabs\, we engage public and private stakeholders across value chains in our effort to connect climate demand with innovative business solutions. SUMMARY:Climathon Murcia: Renaturalization of the Segura River and its Biodiversity in the Municipality of Murcia
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, river sections have been profoundly altered by urban expansion\, inadequate wastewater treatment\, and the construction of infrastructure\, leading to severe degradation of these natural spaces. As a result\, they have lost their function as ecological corridors and their biodiversity\, and they ceased to be places for public enjoyment. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, there has been growing social recognition of the value of river environments\, now seen as a socio-environmental opportunity to integrate nature into urban and peri-urban areas. The renaturalization of these spaces is emerging as a way to restore their ecological\, landscape\, and social functions. In this context\, the Murcia City Council is promoting the river restoration project of the former Segura Riverbed in the El Vivillo Meander. \n\n\n\nChallenges addressed in river renaturalization:\n\n\n\n\nRestore and conserve river ecosystems as a key part of adapting the territory to climate change.\n\n\n\nRestore riverbeds and their flood zones to their natural morphology to significantly reduce the risk and magnitude of flooding.\n\n\n\nDevelop native riparian forests that attract biodiversity and strengthen ecological corridors.\n\n\n\nExplore innovative solutions that integrate river renaturalization with sustainable urban planning.\n\n\n\nRiver restoration in urban environments to improve life in our cities.\n\n\n\nImprove water quality and support groundwater recharge through more natural river design.\n\n\n\nEducation\, outreach\, and public awareness on the importance of restoring and conserving river ecosystems.\n\n\n\nImplement collaborative governance strategies for river restoration in urban settings.\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Climathon Venice 2025
DESCRIPTION:The climate emergency in Venice is unfolding with accelerated and intensified dynamics. The city’s deep connection with its lagoon – long a source of identity and greatness – now becomes also an element of fragility and vulnerability. Venice\, the world’s iconic city of water\, and its lagoon ecosystem\, rich in biodiversity\, local knowledge\, and traditional practices\, stand on the front lines of climate change. Among its most evident impacts\, high tide events\, storm surges\, heavy precipitations\, and heatwaves\, which are becoming increasingly frequent and severe. \n\n\n\nThe challenge is to harness the uniqueness and richness of this territory and turn them into resources for climate resilience. Because resilience – the ability of a system to cope with change without losing its trajectory of development – stems from diversity: of functions\, responses\, and solutions. Policies alone – whether European\, national\, or local – aren’t enough. Infrastructure alone isn’t enough. We need something more. We need connection. We need collective action\, rooted in care for the land and its traditions. We need to be a community. \n\n\n\nThe challenge of Climathon Venice 2025\n\n\n\nLet’s create solutions that build networks and prepare us to face extreme climate events – by leveraging the unique features of Venice and its lagoon. \n\n\n\nClimathon Venice 2025 focuses on two key directions\, both deeply rooted in the city’s identity: \n\n\n\n\nSolutions for and with the most vulnerableThe goal is to design supportive solutions for those most vunlerable to the impacts of climate change. These solutions should emerge from the territory itself\, reflecting the specific characteristics of the lagoon and the complex architecture of the historic center of Venice.\n\n\n\nSolutions for and with the lagoonThe lagoon and its biodiversity are what make Venice truly unique. Can they also become the cornerstone of its climate adaptation? This challenge invites the creation of solutions that promote the active protection of the lagoon ecosystem\, engaging citizens\, schools\, associations\, and institutions while at the same time harnessing biodiversity\, local knowledge\, and traditional practices as active resources in responding to climate change.\n\n\n\n\nHow to participate\n\n\n\nLearn more about the event and how to participate here. \n\n\n\n Who we are and why we do this\n\n\n\nClimathon Venice 2025 is organized by the International Centre for Climate Change Research and Studies (CSRCC)\, in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice\, The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the Biodiversity Gateway of the National Biodiversity Future Center\, under the patronage of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze\, Lettere\, ed Arti [ITA]. We thank The Human Safety Net Foundation by Generali. This initiative is part of our “third mission”\, that is\, activities that foster engagement between academia and society\, with a strong focus on the Venetian territory. Our aim is to actively involve citizens in a public dialogue about the future of Venice and its lagoon in the face of climate change.
