SUMMARY:Resilience in The New European Summer: Securing Farms\, Forests\, and Cities for a Competitive Europe 
DESCRIPTION:The context\n\n\n\nSummer 2026 in Europe will not be like summers gone by. The New European Summer\, the one we have been getting to know over the past ten years\, is one of ruinous crop destruction on European farms\, life-threatening heat in European cities\, and rampaging fires in European forests. In 2022 and 2023 alone\, more than 100\,000 deaths were recorded in Europe due to extreme heat. The loss of lives and homes is compounded by the economic damage\, which devastates both rural and urban prosperity.  \n\n\n\nWhile public and political awareness of the problem is growing with every burnt house and lost harvest\, the only area of consensus is that not nearly enough is being done. In September 2025\, the European Parliament debated the growing challenge of climate resilience and representatives of the regions most impacted called for decisive action. This year\, decisive and proactive responses are needed to help those most impacted by the New European Summer.  \n\n\n\nHow this event addresses it\n\n\n\nThis event\, co-hosted by Kristian Vigenin MEP and Grégory Allione MEP will bring together policymakers\, scientists\, and front-line workers – the groups whose insights are essential for both competitiveness and security over the short and long term. Building on these contributions\, the event can deliver a European resilience agenda that is both effective and achievable\, for this summer\, and the summers to come.   \n\n\n\nPolicy levers to be discussed include\, for the short-term\, ensuring that EU early warning systems are fully operational (via Copernicus and the European Climate and Health Observatory)\, that heat-health protocols are supported and coordinated across care systems through EU4Health\, and that operational and financial support is available to under-resourced volunteer fire services strengthened through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism\, including rescEU. \n\n\n\nOver the longer term\, key EU programmes need to be strengthened to reduce summer climate risks across sectors. DESCRIPTION:The 13th edition of the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) will take place from 17 to 19 June 2026 in Guimarães\, Portugal. As a long-standing and influential European initiative\, EURESFO has\, since 2013\, brought together city representatives\, experts\, and stakeholders from across local and regional institutions to exchange knowledge and advance action on climate resilience. \n\n\n\nHosted by ICLEI Europe\, the European Environment Agency (EEA)\, and the City of Guimarães — European Green Capital 2026 — this year’s forum is co-organised by Climate KIC\, and will explore integrated approaches to climate resilience that go beyond adaptation. SUMMARY:Investing in nature-positive futures: Innovation and place-based finance for bioeconomy and systems change
DESCRIPTION:The transition to a nature-positive economy cannot be driven by technological innovation and capital alone. It also depends on the social fabric that enables communities\, institutions and regions to innovate together. This workshop\, organised by Climate KIC and a partner event of the EU Green Week\, brings together three interdependent themes to explore how widely understood innovation becomes a catalyst for systemic change and mutually reinforcing transformation dynamics. \n\n\n\nFirst\, bioeconomy is a systemic opportunity and emerging industry with high potential to boost EU competitiveness. Moving beyond siloed sectors\, we examine how bio-based value chains can be redesigned at regional and landscape level\, integrating ecological regeneration with economic viability. Drawing on systems innovation experience as a form of social institution-building\, participants will explore how multi-actor coalitions shift the rules\, relationships and mental models that currently lock in unsustainable resource use\, forming the foundational layer for building new financial and innovation approaches. \n\n\n\nSecond\, Place-Based Finance Labs are an innovation instrument to deliver on topics such as the bioeconomy. We showcase how tailor-made financial mechanisms – co-designed with local governments\, communities and investors – unlock capital for nature-positive projects. These labs embody multilevel governance\, aligning EU policy frameworks with national programmes and sub-regional realities so that investments can flow where transformation is actually happening. \n\n\n\nThird\, innovation in its widest sense\, and as an expression of social capital. Through concrete impact stories\, we illustrate the full spectrum of innovation: technological\, business model\, social and policy – already benefiting nature\, people and the economy. Framed through multi-level perspectives on socio-technical transitions\, the stories demonstrate how place-based experiments\, supported by the right social networks and institutional conditions\, can challenge and reshape current systems\, thereby closing the loop between systemic opportunity (bioeconomy) and enabling mechanisms (finance and innovation)\, delivering real-world transformation. \n\n\n\nFormat & objectives\n\n\n\nThis workshop will bring together practitioners\, policymakers\, investors\, regional actors and innovators to explore how bioeconomy\, place-based finance and systems innovation can accelerate nature-positive transformation across Europe. \n\n\n\nThe event will also help inform our position to give feedback on Biotech Act I and as part of a submission to the upcoming call for evidence on Biotech Act II. SUMMARY:Policy Lab: Efficient\, Circular and Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:In cities and communities across the EU\, delivering affordable housing is an urgent social\, economic\, and political imperative. Meeting this demand requires solutions that are both cost- effective and future-proof. \n\n\n\nLeveraging the co-benefits of circular\, energy-efficient\, and climate-resilient housing – such as lower energy and maintenance costs\, greater insurability\, and reduced climate risks – can make homes more affordable in the long run and open the door to innovative\, collaborative\, and systemic solutions. \n\n\n\nTo this end\, the EU Cities Mission is engaging European businesses and industry to translate Mission Cities’ Action and Investment Plans into specific\, quantified\, aggregate demand for green materials and technologies\, infrastructure\, manufacturing\, logistics\, interoperable digital solutions\, and green business models. In this way\, we can accelerate the formation of European lead markets and enhance competitiveness through resilience to climate and economic shocks. \n\n\n\nEmploying an innovative policy impact lab approach\, in this session Climate KIC\, in partnership with the Huge Thing and IRMIR (Institute for the Development of Cities and Regions) will gather key representatives of the European built environment ecosystem – policy makers\, industry\, innovators\, local governments\, subject experts – to start addressing housing related (esp. in terms of renovation or new construction) issues in a practice-oriented way. These representatives will work on matching challenges with solutions\, identifying gaps\, and creating space for participants to acknowledge both opportunities and limitations\, to jointly explore ways and projects for moving forward. \n\n\n\n\n[Business models] In what areas are circularity and efficiency co-benefits of affordability?
