The context<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Summer 2026 in Europe will not be like summers gone by. The New European Summer, the one we have been getting to know over the past ten years, is one of ruinous crop destruction on European farms, life-threatening heat in European cities, and rampaging fires in European forests. In 2022 and 2023 alone, more than 100,000 deaths were recorded in Europe due to extreme heat. The loss of lives and homes is compounded by the economic damage, which devastates both rural and urban prosperity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While public and political awareness of the problem is growing with every burnt house\u00a0and\u00a0lost harvest,\u00a0the only area of consensus is that not\u00a0nearly enough\u00a0is being done.\u00a0In September 2025,\u00a0the European Parliament debated\u00a0the\u00a0growing challenge of climate resilience and representatives of the\u00a0regions\u00a0most impacted called for\u00a0decisive action. This year,\u00a0decisive\u00a0and proactive\u00a0responses\u00a0are\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0help those most impacted by\u00a0the New European Summer.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How this event addresses it<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This event, co-hosted by\u00a0Kristian Vigenin<\/strong>\u00a0MEP <\/strong>e\u00a0Gr\u00e9gory Allione MEP\u00a0<\/strong>will\u00a0bring together\u00a0policymakers,\u00a0scientists,\u00a0and\u00a0front-line\u00a0workers<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the groups whose insights are essential\u00a0for both competitiveness and security\u00a0over the short and long term.\u00a0Building on these contributions, the event can\u00a0deliver a\u00a0European\u00a0resilience\u00a0agenda<\/strong> that is\u00a0both\u00a0effective and achievable, for this summer, and the summers to come.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policy levers\u00a0to be discussed\u00a0include,\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0short-term,\u00a0ensuring that EU\u00a0early warning systems are fully operational (via Copernicus and the European Climate and Health Observatory),\u00a0that\u00a0heat-health protocols are supported and coordinated across care systems through EU4Health, and\u00a0that\u00a0operational and financial support\u00a0is available\u00a0to under-resourced volunteer fire services\u00a0strengthened\u00a0through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, including\u00a0rescEU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the longer term, key EU programmes need to be strengthened to reduce summer climate risks across sectors. The forthcoming EU Climate Resilience and Risk Management Integrated Framework and the European\u00a0Plan for\u00a0Affordable\u00a0Housing should embed binding resilience standards, scaling passive and district cooling and heat-resilient urban design to reduce urban heat.\u00a0Implementation of the Nature Restoration Law should be aligned with fire risk reduction, supporting more resilient forest landscapes.\u00a0Finally,\u00a0future\u00a0CAP\u00a0reforms should\u00a0include\u00a0eco-schemes and risk management instruments\u00a0that help\u00a0farmers adapt to heat, drought, and wildfire through water-efficient practices, climate-resilient crops, and farm-level resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
