One of the biggest issues facing Europe is the lack of solutions at scale for solving the waste plastic crisis.
More than 24m tons of waste plastic is presently lost to recycling. If all of this were converted – EU could save on 14m tons of fossil imports providing a strategic resilience to supply chains.
In addition recycling this kind of volume also has a major impact on carbon mitigation.
However – we are stuck with mechanical recycling (+/- 12%) and a very expensive technology of pyrolysis that consumes huge amounts of hidden energy to prepare a restricted amount of feedstock for conversion back to oil.
It feels sometimes like standing on the side to notice that the “emperor is not wearing any clothes”! We are a start-up that has an awesome technical team with the capability of solving this problem – using hot water and high pressure and are delighted to be in Climate KIC.
What we need now is to build a consortium of believers to do the deep dive proof of scalability and hope we can attract potential partners through this community.
We would like to invite a small workshop of participants in plastics, petrochemical and especially waste handlers to come together for exploration. I hope very much that through this forum we can make it happen. Also please feel free to get in touch via shai@terrawaste.tech
Yes, indeed, as you’re saying the recycling process in Europe is so inefficient, and barely fulfils the claims that the same industry makes. There’s a long way ahead.
Happy to hear that your startup is working on it. Can you maybe share more about your solution and the consortium you’re trying to build? I’d love to support you with it.
If you prefer, you can write me at pietro.sodano@climate-kic.org so that we can have a chat and explore together pathways to collaborate.
Thank you for this report. It is most helpful.
